rural learners."
My Strategic Approach

UN FAO Fish4ACP "Two Paths" Behavioral Change Framework
Communications & Visual Communications Lead Consultant | UN Food and Agriculture Organization
The Challenge
"Traditional gender-based exploitation prevention messaging was failing to resonate with fishing communities
around Lake Tanganyika. 'Pela Ukupela' (Fish for Sex) practices persisted despite conventional awareness
campaigns. Needed culturally adapted visual framework that could work across diverse literacy levels and gain
buy-in from traditional leadership structures."
My Design Approach
Developed "Two Paths" visual metaphor framework culturally grounded in community values
Created bilingual design system (Bemba and English) for maximum reach
Designed behavioral change brochures using culturally appropriate imagery and visual hierarchy
Built visual toolkit adaptable for low-literacy and high-literacy audiences
Incorporated feedback from 2 paramount chiefs and 16 village headmen into design iterations
Design Showcase
English Version: "Path of Open Secret" vs "Path of Dignity and Community" (click to enlarge)
Bemba Translation: "Inshila Yelyashi Ilikaya" vs "Inshila Yamuchinshi Necintubwingi" - culturally adapted messaging (click to enlarge | Download Full PDF)
Back Cover: Visual storytelling guide with Lake Tanganyika fishing context (click to enlarge)
Design Framework: Cultural Adaptation
Bilingual Visual Metaphor: The "Two Paths" framework uses
contrasting imagery to present choices - "The Path of the Open Secret" (exploitation through fish-for-sex
practices) versus "The Path of Dignity and Community" (sustainable livelihoods and fair trade). The design
employs culturally resonant symbols: broken families and health risks on one path, community strength and
economic empowerment on the other. By translating into Bemba and maintaining visual clarity across literacy
levels, the framework bridges communication gaps between low-literacy fishing communities and government
stakeholders.
Impact & Results
Bilingual visual framework adopted across 16 fishing communities. Design toolkit used by field teams for
community engagement sessions. Materials successfully bridged literacy gaps - effective for both community
members and government stakeholders. Traditional leaders endorsed messaging due to culturally appropriate
design approach. Framework now being adapted for broader Fish4ACP use across Northern Province.
